
European Heatwave Shattering Temperature Records
Europe is currently in the grip of an unprecedented heatwave, one that is not only shattering temperature records but also claiming lives and inflicting severe damage on the economy. While using more wood in construction will not directly stop or reverse these extreme weather events, it can play a meaningful role in how we adapt our built environment to rising temperatures.
External wooden cladding, for instance, acts as a natural thermal insulator, helping to keep building interiors cooler during scorching summer days (while retaining warmth in winter). In stark contrast, materials like steel and aluminium behave like “thermal flame throwers,” absorbing and radiating intense heat. Concrete and brick, though cooler than metal, still transfer heat inward, gradually raising indoor temperatures and increasing reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning.
That said, wood’s true value lies in its broader environmental and design potential. Timber construction has a significantly lower carbon footprint than concrete or steel, helping cities reduce their overall emissions. Moreover, wood’s lighter weight makes it easier to integrate green roofs, living walls, and shaded facades features that actively cool the surrounding air through evaporation and shade.
However, wood is not a silver bullet. It cannot replace the need for comprehensive, forward-thinking urban planning. Truly climate-resilient cities must prioritise expanding green spaces, restoring natural water cycles, reducing car dependency, and implementing smarter building orientations and shading strategies. The fight against extreme heat requires a holistic approach, one that tackles both the root causes of climate change and the immediate, life-threatening symptoms of soaring temperatures.
